Haunting: A Friendly Font for Modern Web Projects

I was redesigning a landing page for a local ceramics studio’s online shop. The brief called for warmth, craftsmanship, and a bit of human touch—something that felt personal, not industrial. I had a hero image of a beautifully textured vase, a clean layout ready, and a palette of earthy colors. But the headline felt sterile. The standard sans serif I’d used as a placeholder was too cold. I needed a typeface that whispered, not shouted. That’s when I loaded Haunting into the design file.

A First Impression in the Browser

Applied to the main headline, “Handcrafted for Daily Rituals,” Haunting immediately changed the atmosphere. Its clean, relaxed handwritten style brought exactly the character I was looking for. The letters weren’t overly dramatic or whimsical; they were neat and friendly. This wasn’t a font trying to be a piece of art itself—it was a font trying to make the content feel more approachable. It gave the page an instant sense of authenticity, which is gold for any online brand selling something with a story.

In the context of web design, that’s a crucial distinction. Many script or handwritten fonts can be difficult to read at smaller sizes or overwhelming in long passages. Haunting, with its simple and consistent letterforms, avoided that. It felt like a polished, confident signature, not a hurried note. This made it a viable candidate not just for that one headline, but for other key spots across the site.

Where This Font Works Best on a Website

For the ceramics project, I ended up using it in a few strategic places:

This is the sweet spot for a font like Haunting. It’s a display font—perfect for short, impactful text where you want to establish mood and hierarchy. Think:

I wouldn’t use it for long body copy paragraphs. Its role is to draw attention, set a tone, and then hand off the reading experience to a more neutral typeface for the details. This creates a clear visual hierarchy, guiding users through your content.

Readability and Technical Considerations

Even for headlines, readability is non-negotiable. On the ceramics site, I tested Haunting across devices. On mobile, I made sure the headline size was generous enough that the handwritten details remained clear and didn’t blur into a thick stroke. Against both light and dark backgrounds, it held up well because its strokes are distinct and not overly thin.

A practical note for any designer: before committing to a font for a web project, always check its webfont availability and included styles. For a commercial project, you need the proper licensing for digital use. Also, confirm the file formats (like WOFF2 for modern browsers) to ensure fast loading, which is critical for keeping your site performance sharp. Haunting comes as part of the Script Amp category, which typically means it’s designed with these digital contexts in mind.

Building a Cohesive Digital Brand

The true power of a typeface like this isn’t in a single headline. It’s in creating consistency across your entire brand identity. For that ceramics studio, using Haunting on their website meant we could also use it on their Instagram graphics, email newsletter headers, and even their packaging labels. This creates a recognizable thread that ties the digital and physical experience together, building brand trust.

For a SaaS founder or course creator, the same principle applies. Using a distinctive but clean font like this on your landing page, your app’s welcome screen, and your digital ads creates a polished, professional feel. It signals that you’ve attended to the details.

The Art of Pairing It with Other Fonts

No font lives alone on a website. For the body text on the ceramics site, I paired Haunting with a simple, geometric sans serif. The contrast was perfect: the friendly, personal headline supported by extremely readable, modern paragraphs. This is a classic and effective font pairing strategy: a distinctive display font for mood, paired with a neutral sans serif or serif for clarity.

If the brand had a more editorial angle (say, a writer’s portfolio), pairing Haunting with a classic serif font for body copy could work beautifully, blending personal flair with literary substance. The key is to let your display font be the personality and your supporting font be the reliable foundation.

More Than Just a Pretty Face

Choosing a font is often seen as an aesthetic decision, but in web design, it’s a usability and communication decision. When I used Haunting, I wasn’t just making the page look nicer. I was making the brand’s message feel more authentic. I was improving the visual scanning path for users by creating clear headline landmarks. I was adding to the overall user engagement by making the first impression warm and intentional.

Whether you’re designing a blog, a coaching website, a product launch page, or a small business site, the typeface you choose for your key messages is a silent ambassador for your brand. Haunting, with its clean and friendly character, offers a way to be that ambassador without being loud, chaotic, or difficult to understand. It has the potential to become that go-to font in your toolkit for projects that need a human touch in a digital space. In my real project, it did exactly that—transforming a standard layout into a polished, inviting online experience that truly felt handcrafted.
